Chapter 30

The Sinclairs had just walked through the door, barely having time to set their things down, when the phone rang,
Kevin Sinclair answered with a scowl. The voice on the other end made him want to smash the phone against the wall.
“So, I hear you’re out of police custody.”
Zina’s voice was calm, as if she were commenting on the weather.
The veins on Kevin’s forehead pulsed. He forced the words out through gritted teeth.
“You little bitch. I should have strangled you at birth. You’re nothing but an ungrateful snake. You’ll get what’s coming to you. Yeah, we’re out. What are you gonna do about it? Throw us back in?”
The taunt made him feel a rush of satisfaction.
A small, knowing smile played on Zina’s lips. Fool, she thought, but left the word unsaid.
Checking the progress bar on her computer screen, Zina continued. “I’ve recorded that little outburst. I’m sure you wouldn’t want it getting out.”
“What do you want?” Kevin’s jaw was clenched so tight it ached. He could have kicked himself.
Rosie sidled up to him, her expression full of concern. “What is it, Dad?”
“It’s nothing,” Kevin muttered, shaking his head. “Go on and get some rest,”
His hushed words still carried through the phone’s speaker.
Zina glanced down at her chest, feeling a dull, unidentifiable ache.
After a few seconds of silence, she spoke. “I want my official records. I’m cutting all legal ties with you and this family, for good.”
She let that sink in before adding, “T’d think carefully if I were you. The Sinclair Group isn’t exactly on stable ground right
now, is it?”
The retort on the tip of Kevin’s tongue died. He pressed his lips together, saying nothing.
It felt like an eternity before he finally took a sharp breath and gave in. “Fine. But don’t come crawling back when you get thrown out on your ass.
“You don’t have to worry about me. You should worry about your own company before it goes bankrupt and you have nowhere to go. I want my papers tomorrow. Don’t be late.”
With that, Zina hung up. She saved the data transfer on her computer, shut it down, and went straight to bed.
On the other end, Kevin stared at the dead line, his face flushed a deep red.
“That damn bitch.

The curse echoed in the quiet house. His wife, Avery, walked over. “What was that about? Who was on the phone?”
“It’s nothing”
Kevin’s lips formed a thin line. He couldn’t bring himself to tell her.
Early the next morning, Kevin left the house, saying he had some business to attend to.
When he saw Zina, his eyes were bloodshot. “I brought what you wanted. Now you’d better keep your end of the deal.”
“Don’t worry. I’m not like you.”
Zina stretched lazily and glanced at the folder he was holding out “Let’s go. Once the paperwork is finalized, I’ll delete the file right in front of you.”
“Fine.” Kevin had no room to argue. He followed her to her car.
The moment he saw the limited–edition Panamera, his suspicions were confirmed.
