Chapter 41
Lydia stared at Zina with the hatred one reserves for a mortal enemy.
“You just wait. I’ll get you out of here,” she seethed, then slammed the door on her way out.
The room fell silent. Zina rolled her wrists and sighed.
“You can come out now. How long have you been eavesdropping by the window?”
“Boss, you always know,” Chris said with an embarrassed grin as he vaulted over the windowsill.
He took one look around and shook his head. “Boss, is this really where you’re staying? This place is a dump compared to the room we have for you. Are you sure you don’t want to come back with us?”
He looked at Zina with pleading eyes, like a puppy begging for a treat.
Zina rubbed her temples. If the Lamberts knew you called the room they’ve carefully maintained for years a dump, they’d
have a fit!
She shook the useless thought from her head. “No, I’m fine. They’re my family, after all. I should stay for a while.”
Chris knew that once the Boss made up her mind, there was no changing it, so he dropped the subject.
He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out a USB drive, presenting it to Zina like a trophy.
“Boss, we found some related evidence. We couldn’t track down the scrapped car, so we’ve been checking every repair shop one by one.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Zina said, shaking her head. “Check in Springvale. I think we might find what we’re looking for there.”
An anonymous account had messaged her the day before, telling her to go to Springvale to find what she needed.
She didn’t know who was behind it, but she couldn’t afford to ignore any lead.
Her gaze fell to the drive as she gathered her thoughts.
“Boss,” Chris began again, “aren’t you going to explain what happened earlier?”
Since she was determined to stay, he wanted her to be happy. But from what he’d just seen, this family seemed like nothing but trouble.
Zina shook her head. “They didn’t believe her.
For a moment, she had thought Yvonne and Adrian had fallen for it completely.
But Adrian’s conflicted expression as he left–the frustration mixed with a flicker of concern deep in his eyes–had given him away.
And Yvonne had clearly been dragged away against her will. The matriarch of the Lambert family wasn’t so easily fooled.
Zina let out a long breath. “The Lamberts aren’t stupid,” she stated calmly.

Chapter 41
Chris scratched his head and said no more.
The Boss always had a plan. He just had to follow orders.
At the Sinclair residence.
Rosie returned from the mall looking like the cat that got the cream. The first thing she announced in the living room was, “Dad, Mom, I’ve made a connection with the Lamberts.”
Kevin, who had been stressing over his company’s problems, immediately lit up. He hurried over to her. “What happened?”
Rosie’s eyes darted around slyly. “I ran into Miss Lambert at the mall. She seems to like me a lot
“You have to hold on to that connection, Rosie. The Lamberts could be a huge help to the company,” Kevin urged, his eyes gleaming.
Before Rosie could respond, his expression soured again. “You’re my most prized daughter,” he said, his voice heavy. “The company is in trouble. This time… everything depends on you.”
