Chapter 46
The doctor savored their praise, his expression growing more arrogant.
He was about to say something else when he looked down and realized Zina had already knelt beside the boy.
She had used two of her custom silver needles earlier, and it pained her to use more of her limited supply. She pulled a few more fine needles from her kit and expertly inserted them into specific points on the boy’s body.
Almost instantly, some color returned to his pale, bluish face.
The man caught a glimpse and started shouting again.
“What are you doing? Don’t you know you can’t just…
He never finished his sentence. The boy on the ground let out a soft whimper.
Zina’s face lit up. She quickly pulled out a small, elegant porcelain vial, shook out a tiny pill, and gently fed it to the boy.
A moment later, his eyes fluttered open. He looked around in a daze, then his gaze settled on Zina and he broke into a wide grin.
“Miss, you’re really pretty. Like a star.”
His eyes sparkled as he spoke.
Zina’s heart melted. “I need to take the needles out now, she said softly. “It won’t hurt, but I need you to be brave for me, okay?”
“Okay. Cain is always brave.”
The boy’s sweet, clear voice was disarming.
Zina swiftly removed the needles and stroked his head. “You need to rest for another minute before you get up.
Cain didn’t ask why, simply nodding in understanding.
With that done, Zina stood up, crossed her arms, and looked at the doctor with a wry smile.
“Right. What were you saying before? If I saved him, you’d quit? Was that it?”
“That’s absurd!”
The man’s face flushed a deep red as he staunchly denied it.
Zina looked as if she’d expected this. A smirk played on her lips as she pointed to an older woman who had been watching from the start. “Ma’am, you were right here the whole time. You must have heard what he said, right?”
The woman froze, looking from Zina to the doctor. Her face turned red and she quickly shook her head. “Don’t ask me. I don’t know anything My family is waiting for me to make dinner.”
She clutched her grocery basket and hurried away.

Seeing this, the rest of the onlookers began to disperse. No one wanted to get involved, especially not against an attending physician. It wasn’t worth the trouble.
In an instant, the packed street was nearly empty.
A triumphant grin spread across the doctor’s face, a silent boast.
“So? Who’s going to back up your story now?” he sneered. “Don’t get a big head just because you got lucky. This is the real world. No one is on your side. Maybe you should learn your place.”
He turned his back on Zina and greeted the paramedics who had come from the ambulance, his demeanor casual and dismissive.
“Alright, alright, let’s go. The kid’s fine. Probably just faking it for attention anyway.”
A young female paramedic looked hesitant, as if she wanted to properly check the boy’s condition.
But before she could take a step, the doctor barked at her. The nurse flinched and reluctantly turned back toward the ambulance.
Just as the doors were about to close, a small hand reached out and stopped them.
Cain looked straight up at the doctor.
“Mister, you shouldn’t break a promise.”
