Little did he know that at this very moment, Wade had already made his way outside and intercepted Zina, who was about
to leave.
“You little rascal, always vanishing without a trace–had me searching everywhere for you,” he said, voice rough with emotion. “Trying to sneak off again?”
Wade had seen countless goodbyes in his long life. Yet now, against all his experience, he felt tears pricking his eyes.
Zina stopped and looked back at him.

Before she could explain further, Wade’s face brightened–then he suddenly caught her sleeve.
“Good, you’re staying then. How about giving this old man your contact info? We really hit it off, you know. Why not stay here with me for a few days?”

Wade looked at her and let out another sigh. “I’ve been rather troubled lately. Truth is, this whole disciple search was just a cover. I needed an excuse to ask about you…and maybe find some decent kids along the way. Now that I’ve found I might as well extend my stay here for a while.”

A twinge of guilt washed over Zinn as she listened, her hand instinctively going to her nose.
Wade’s voice abruptly turned grave.
“Let me guess–the Doctor the Quinn family has been searching for is you, isn’t it

His eyes gleamed with sharp anticipation as he fixed his penetrating gaze on her.
For a fleeting moment. Zina wanted to flinch, but she steeled herself and remained perfectly still.
“Me? How could it be me? You know my temper–if I said I wasn’t coming, I definitely wouldn’t show up.”
Wade remained silent. After a long pause, he let out a barely audible sigh.
“I’ll leave that to you. But promise me–if anything happens, you must tell me. I genuinely see you as granddaughter, and I would never do anything to harm you.”
Zina looked up into his clouded eyes.
For a fleeting moment, she had a strong inkling that Wade was holding something back from her.
“Or perhaps, Zina wondered, is Wade seeing someone else through me?
She pressed her lips together, said nothing more, and gave a quiet nod.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed. Zina glanced at the caller ID, then promptly locked the screen without answering.
“Not going to take the call? Wade asked, his curiosity about Zina growing stronger by the minute.
Zina shook her head, then changed the subject. “Weren’t we just discussing the Quinn descendants‘ conditions? Have you made any progress, Mr. Sylvan?”
At the mention of this, Wade let out another weary sigh.
