Inside her room, Rosie had her hand cupped over the receiver as she hissed in a low, angry voice at the person on the other end.
“A bunch of useless idiots! I paid her a fortune, and this is how she repays me?”
“Miss Sinclair, there’s really nothing we can do. The target you want us to mess with is clearly well–connected. Even if you paid us all the money in the world, this job is just beyond us.”
The man’s voice was heavy with resignation, making it clear he was done with the matter.
Rosie panicked, her voice growing increasingly fierce as she snapped, “No way! You’re tied to me now. If I go down, you’re coming with me!”
“Then there’s nothing we can do.”
The man hung up without another word. When Rosie frantically redialed, all her calls went straight to voicemail–his number was now completely unreachable.
Rosie gritted her teeth, her furious gaze fixed straight ahead.
Suddenly, a familiar figure flashed through her mind, and her once–dull eyes instantly lit up with renewed determination.
Meanwhile, back at the Lambert family mansion. Zina was gazing absently at the moonlit night outside by the window.
A knock came at the door. When she went to answer it, the last person she expected to see was standing there.
“Adrian?”
“Mm–hmm,” Adrian mumbled, his head drooping listlessly. “You’re probably wondering why I’m even here, aren’t you? You must think I should have been packed off by now.”
Zina gave a subtle twitch of her lips. Hearing her thoughts spoken up by other people was awkward. She cleared her throat, averted her gaze, and murmured, “Not really”
Adrian continued, “I want to clear things up about Lydia. I regret what I said to you that day–it must have hurt you deeply.”
His voice trailed off, his face flushing crimson.
