  1. Jemaya’s POV

The last class was the worst because I’d finally recovered some energy, but the teacher was Mr. Macroon. I expected him to be as mean as yesterday, but he turned out to be ‘kind’ —an attribute I never thought I’d relate to him.

“Ugh, not again,” I sighed.

“Well, you came to school in the golden Rolls-Royce, right?”

I shrugged.

“Looks like you don’t know this, but that’s the one and only golden Rolls-Royce in the world.”

At that point, I could have just fainted from shock.

“Jemaya, is everything okay?” Mr. Macroon asked.

“No-I mean yes, thank you.”

“Everyone can start submitting their phones now,” he turned to the class as the class rep started going around to collect our phones.

“Uh, sir, I need to make this quick update,” the TikTok girl, whose name I later learned was Tiana, said as she took her phone around the class. Meanwhile, Claire took this as an opportunity to repair her image.

“Looks like you didn’t know how dangerously wealthy he was. What’s your relationship with him, by the way?” Robin was saying when Claire appeared with her phone in front of me.

Tiana also had hers pointed at us, ready.

“Look, I’m not ready for any of your drama tonight,” I said as I fished for my phone in my bag.

“I don’t do drama unless someone is pretending to have a phone when they clearly don’t.”

“How is that any of your business?” Elina shouted from the front, but I winked at her to stop.

Her anger was quite explosive, and I had no doubt she was still looking for a way to let it all out.

“Quickly, guys. Everyone needs to submit their phones in the basket,” the class rep reminded.

“You mean some of us,” Claire said, her eyes pinned on me. “Because there’s someone who doesn’t have a phone to drop.”

She looked like she wasn’t going to give up anytime soon.

“And if I take out my phone?” I asked.

“It can’t be as expensive as mine,” she said with a shrug.

“That’s right, guys. Head Queen has the most expensive phone in the whole school. It’s the iPhone Infinity,” Tiana announced to her followers, and a couple of people in class agreed.

“I tried to get it, but it was sold out. So if anyone buys one now, everyone would know it’s second-hand. We have to wait for the next series.”

“Right, she’s so lucky…”

“Jemaya, you don’t have to pretend.”

“Argh, just shut up,” I screamed in my head and took out my phone. And like a magic command, everyone fell silent.

Tiana, who had been yapping endlessly, Claire, and even the class rep-until Robin spoke.

“Is that the iPhone Infinity Pro Max with the customizable slab? Wait a second, Jemaya. You have your name on your phone! Just how much did you want to surprise us?!”

“Robin, keep your voice down. I don’t know how expensive it is because I just got it.”

“Keep my voice down? That phone could buy my laptop, and you know how much of a gadget fanatic I am.”

Robin, who would have been the nerd, was the one to break the silence and deliver the silent slap to Claire’s face.

“Oh my god. My followers. I have to go.” Tiana ended her live immediately.

And if there’s anything I’d come to learn about the teachers in this school, it’s that they were opportunists and would bend with the tides. Also, they knew how to appear and save the tension from escalating.

“Okay, guys. We can start the class now. Let’s all return to our seats,” he said as I was about to drop my phone.

“But you don’t have to if you don’t want to. It would be okay if you just turned it off.”

Another thing I’d learned was the insane hierarchy that existed among us.

“Why? She can’t possibly be the owner of this phone, right? Only I have the most beautiful phone in the whole school. I am the Royal Queen of the Plastics…” Claire felt threatened as she was starting to get hysterical. But even her minions could see she couldn’t win this round.

“Are you this stupid, or are you just pretending to be?” Elina defended, further battering Claire’s ego, but I was glad she-

“What? So what if she brought this phone? She must have stolen it, and I can just get the same one tomorrow. No big deal.”

“Tut tut. It has been confirmed that you’re really just a foolish human. That phone is the only one of its kind in the world. It’s not something you can have just because you want it. If you know what’s best for you, you’ll go on your knees and start apologizing.”

“What? Why should I apologize just because of this- She doesn’t deserve to be beside Jake Hardin!” Claire screamed and it made me wonder if there was more to her targetting me. Why did she sound like I’d snatched something out of her hands?

“Let’s start class,” Mr. Macroon interjected again. “Miss Claire, please,” he said to give her some space.

“Yes, sir.”

The whole class scrambled to their seats, and the rest of the class went on without any confrontation, but I felt even more exhausted as I packed my bags.

“What a crazy day!” Everyone’s eyes on me were filled with many things-for the first time, jealousy.

“Get used to it, girl,” Tiana said as we got ready together while she hugged the book in her arms.

“I agree with the space nerd,” Robin said and walked away before it escalated into a fight.

“Bye, guys.”

“Bye, Jemaya, and thanks for the book! I promise to take care of it more than my biological children. Thank you.”

“Sure,” I smiled at her as I noticed the driver from this morning in the garage when Robin said, “Nerds are so weird,” before rounding a corner.

“That cyber nerd should be lucky I’m in a good mood.”
