Chapter 11
Ethan shot to his feet and stormed into the bathroom, splashing cold water over himself in a desperate
attempt to extinguish the fire raging inside.
But no matter how much water he threw on his face, Ashley’s image stayed–sharp, vivid, unshakable. The cold rivulets down his body only stoked the flames instead of quenching them. It reminded him of the times he and Ashley had been together in the shower….
His hands slid from his face, curling lower–closing around the stubborn, unyielding ache.
“Ash… harder.”
“Ash… you’re amazing…”
He shut his eyes, calling her name again and again. With a ragged groan, he surrendered–utterly–to the
memory of Ashley.
When Ethan’s eyes flicked open, he found Lila in the doorway–frozen, her face a mask of shock and humiliation. She was standing in the doorway of the bathroom, shaking all over, her mouth gaping in horror
before it released a piercing scream.
“Ahhh!!!” Lila’s shriek tore through the air. “Ethan, you’re disgusting! How could you–how could you do this
to me?”
“I’m right here–flesh and blood, standing beside you, and you–You called her name while…!”
Her voice broke as she screamed again, hysterical, her rage nearly uncontrollable. Ethan panicked and
reached out to cover her mouth.
“Lila, don’t shout. I–I don’t even know what came over me…”
“Don’t touch me! Don’t come near me!”
Lila struggled violently, refusing to hear him out. She stumbled back, her heel catching–slamming hard
into the sink’s edge.
It all happened so fast.
Ethan reached out, but failed to catch her in time. Her scream was agonizing as she collapsed to the
ground.
Blood gushed between her legs, blooming across the white tiles in a shocking crimson. Ethan’s vision
blurred from shock.

He scooped her up immediately, though she was still weakly struggling in pain.
“Let go of me! Don’t touch me! It hurts–it hurts so bad–my baby…”
Ethan’s chest tightened at her words. The weight of guilt nearly crushed the breath from his lungs.
“Lila, please don’t be afraid. I’ll get you to the hospital.”
She wanted to push him away, but the pain overwhelmed her. Her limbs went limp, and moments later, she
lost consciousness in his arms.
Ethan carried her out of the bathroom in his robe, drenched in blood.
When she was rushed into the emergency room, his robe was soaked through with dark red stains. The
sight sent a tremor through his hands.
He slapped himself across the face, hard.
What the hell had he done?
For three hours, while the doctors worked to save her, Ethan stood outside the ER without moving.
Every few minutes, he slapped himself again.
By the time the doctors emerged, his cheeks were burning and swollen.
“I’m sorry,” the doctor said solemnly. “We couldn’t save the baby. She lost too much blood. We had no
choice but to remove her uterus…”
The words hit like a blade sinking straight into his chest. He stood frozen, unable to react.
He was drowning in remorse, ashamed to face Lila, unwilling to revisit what had happened.
He no longer understood what he felt–for Lila, for Ashley anymore. And he didn’t want to. He buried
himself in work instead, using it to escape.
Whenever someone urged him to visit Lila at the hospital, he brushed it off with the excuse of being too
busy.
During this time, he turned on the phone that had long since been repaired. The recovered messages were
still intact.
The final one from Ashley jumped out at him–and his heart sank.
Ashley’s final words: she hated him.
