Chapter 5
The silver mist filled the arena in seconds.
My lungs burned, and my skin felt like it was on fire.
A concentration this high was lethal.
But Gabriel didn’t panic.
He held me close, and his powerful Alpha aura formed a protective shield around us. The silver mist swirled around the barrier, unable to penetrate.
“How is that possible?” I asked, stunned.
“Let’s just say silver and I have an… understanding,” Gabriel murmured, his eyes glowing with a faint gold light. “We can talk
about it later.”
On the other side of the arena, Ethan was roaring in agony.
The silver was eating away at him, but Gabriel made no move to help.
I watched Ethan struggle in the mist, my heart a cold, dead weight.
His suffering was the direct result of his own choices.
Seeing me protected in Gabriel’s arms, a fire of pure jealousy erupted in Ethan’s eyes.
He lunged, grabbing my arm and yanking me behind him. “Stay away from my mate!” he snarled. “She bears my mark! She is mine!”
Mate?
The word was a bitter joke.
I ripped my arm from his grasp and stared at him coldly.
“Mark? Ethan, that mark meant nothing the moment you sentenced me to a trial by death. I’m breaking it right now!”
Gathering all my strength, I focused on the ancient ritual to forcibly sever the bond. The pain would be like tearing out my own heart, but I didn’t care.
But as I reached for the bond… there was nothing. A void.
The scar on my neck, the one I thought was a symbol of our eternal bond, didn’t react to my power. It was inert. Cold.
It wasn’t a mark. It was a lie.
The world spun.
The last three years, everything I had cherished, had been a complete and utter lie.
Gabriel stepped in front of me, his long fingers gently touching my neck.
He looked back at the stunned Ethan and sneered. “That’s not a mate mark,” he stated, his voice dripping with contempt. “It’s
an alchemical illusion. A glamour spell painted onto the skin to fool a desperate Alpha.”
“No… impossible!” Ethan stumbled back, his face a mask of panic and disbelief.
“Sophia, let me see, I didn’t know…”
His backpedaling was pathetic.

I couldn’t hear another word he said.
As the silver mist began to dissipate, the arena gates were suddenly thrown open.
“Ethan!” Bella rushed in, followed by a squad of pack rescue guards. “I’m here to save you!”
Her eyes were only for Ethan, completely ignoring Gabriel and me.
Her “rescue” was perfectly timed to interrupt the suffocating confrontation and Ethan’s laughable excuses.
Medics swarmed in, clumsily lifting Ethan onto a stretcher.
“Sophia… I…” he tried to apologize, but he was already being carried away.
I watched the whole farce, my heart completely numb.
