Lucian abandoned his fight with Maya and rushed over to her, his eyes locked on hers. “You’re leaving already?”
“Yeah, I was waiting for you to come home, but it seems you’re busy here.”
“I just need to finish up a little thing at the pack house, and then I’ll join you home soon. Please
wait for me.”
Katie shook her head, feeling a mix of frustration and exhaustion. “I’m tired, and I can’t wai anymore. We’ll see each other at home.”
Lucian’s eyes searched hers. “Are you really okay?”
“Yeah, of course, why wouldn’t I be?”
With that, she turned and left, getting into her car and driving away.
But as she hit the road, the sky darkened, and rain started pouring down.
Her car suddenly sputtered and died, leaving her stranded.
Katie got out of the car, groaning in frustration as the rain soaked her clothes.
Just as she was trying to figure out what to do, another car pulled up beside her.
.iam.
He offered Katie a ride. “You’re going to stand in the rain like that? Come on, hop in.”
Katie hesitated, her gaze darting towards her broken–down car. “I’ll call for help from the pacl
nembers. I’ll be home soon.”
Stop being stubborn and get into the car. You’ll catch a cold before we get there. It’s alread lark, and I don’t like you being out here in the rain.”
She exhaled.
Then relented.
What are you doing here?” she asked as she got into the car.
Liam’s smile was smooth. “I just happened to pass by.”
She arched a brow. “Really? You just happened to pass by?”
Liam’s chuckle was low. “Yeah, of course. Do you think I was following you or something?”
Katie shrugged, her eyes still wary. “You can never know. I don’t understand you these days. You seem to pop up everywhere.”
‘I’m trying to make an effort.”
Her voice was flat. “Drop it.”
The rest of the ride was silent.
And there was some kind of tension too.
When they arrived at the mansion, Lucian was just entering the gates.
He spotted Liam rushing to open the car door for Katie, and he felt jealous.
Lucian’s eyes narrowed as he watched Liam drive off.
Katie called out a thank you, but Lucian’s gaze lingered on her.
As she turned to enter the house, he stood in front of her, his eyes piercing. “How did you end up in Liam’s car?”
Katie’s voice was calm. “My car broke down, and he happened to pass by.”
Lucian’s expression turned skeptical. “Can’t you see what Liam is trying to do?”
Her eyes flashed with defensiveness. “What is he trying to do? Is there anything he’s trying to do that Maya isn’t trying to do?”
He looked perplexed. “Excuse me, what do you mean by that?”
Katie’s voice rose. “You know what, forget I said anything.”
‘I hope you’re not misunderstanding my relationship with Maya. We had something once, but it’s gone now.”
Katie’s laughter was bitter. “Oh, I find that very hard to believe.”
Come on, don’t be like that. You know I’m committed to you.”
Yeah, maybe just as your wife. Or maybe as Luna of the pack.”
Their argument escalated, with neither side willing to back down.
Katie’s mind spun with questions.
Vas she falling for Lucian’s charms?
Vas she truly in love with him?
And what about Maya? Was Lucian really over her, or was there still something between them?
ucian’s eyes searched Katie’s face. “Where is this coming from?”
I just seem to feel that you’re falling for your ex–girlfriend all over again.”
le frowned. “Come on, why are you being like that? What Maya and I had was years ago, and here’s nothing for you to worry about.”
Katie’s eyes flashed with frustration. “Here, right now, with Maya around, I feel like I’m competing vith her for your attention.”
le bit his lip. “Okay, let’s talk about Liam then. You getting into his car is not a good thing.” Katie snapped at him. “Would you prefer I stayed under the rain and froze to death?”
Oh, come on, you know I don’t mean that.”
You know what, I’m really tired, and I just need to rest. Maybe we can talk about this some other ime.”
The argument ended with Katie shutting herself off from Lucian. He tried calling her, but she didn’t respond.
t wasn’t until the next day, when the source of the infiltrator poisoning the pack members was finally revealed, that the tension between them momentarily dissipated.
The traitor was found to be a pack member seeking revenge on Lucian’s late father.
As justice was served, and the traitor was imprisoned.
The pack celebrated.
Later that evening, as Katie returned from the company to join the party, her car screeched to a halt.
A group of rogues.
She started to panic. She had a tiny baby in her womb.
She tried to fight back, but there were too many of them.
Meanwhile, at the pack house, Maya was busy cooking up a storm. “Let’s celebrate now that the mysterious person who has been poisoning us has been found and put to jail,” she said, her voice filled with excitement. “We have every reason to celebrate our lives.”
Lucian looked around. “Katie is not here yet?”
Maya poured a wine in a glass.“I already called Katie to come.”
.ucian’s gaze fell on his phone, and he frowned. “I texted her earlier to tell her about the celebration, and she typed okay, but it’s been some time now, and she hasn’t shown up yet.”
Maya’s voice was dismissive. “Stop looking at your phone and come enjoy the party.”
But Lucian’s instincts were on high alert.
Something didn’t feel right. He tried calling Katie, but her phone went straight to voicemail.
Ineasiness settled in the pit of his stomach.
Where was Katie?
‘he party was in full swing. With lively chatter. Music. Laughter filling the air.
ucian’s eyes scanned the crowd, his brow furrowed in concern. “Why isn’t Katie here yet? Mayb should try calling her again.”
Maya’s grip on his arm tightened. “Come on, you’ve got to eat. Katie’s on her way, don’t worr bout it.”
lis doubts lingered, but Maya’s persuasive smile won him over.
le started eating and drinking, but soon felt a strange, fuzzy sensation in his head.
Hey, I don’t feel so good,” he said, holding his head.
Maya’s expression was innocent. “Oh, really? What’s the problem?”
