I had been waiting for this.
I knew getting involved with a witch would come at a heavy
cost, but at this point, I had no other options. Every other plan
had fallen apart.
“I have to go,” I told Aiden, cutting him off before he could say
anything more.
His brows furrowed. “You’re really going through with this?”
“I don’t have a choice. Michael’s holding Asher somewhere, and
I can’t just sit here waiting.”
Matthew hesitated, “About Kylie-”
“I’m aware she’s your mate,” I cut in, keeping my voice steady.
“That doesn’t change my feelings about her. She’s still partly
responsible for what happened to Asher.”
He swallowed. “I’m not trying to defend her. I just want you to
remember that people can be torn in different directions. Kylie
lost her way, and. well, I can’t change the bond, even if it’s the

worst timing in the world.”
I studied his expression. “Are you still with me?” I asked. “Or are
you going to take her side if it comes to it?”
Matthew’s jaw tightened. “I promised to help you bring Asher
back. That hasn’t changed.”
That’s all I needed to hear.
His eyes still flickered with conflict, but I didn’t give him a
chance to continue. I turned on my heel and walked away.
I didn’t bother telling Philip where I was going.
I knew exactly how that conversation would go. He’d try to
stop me. He’d remind me how reckless this was.
I didn’t need another lecture. I needed action.
Instead, I sent him a quick mind–link. “Hold things down while
do something. incredibly crazy!”
His reply was immediate. “Violet. Where are you going?”
“To fix this.”
Before he could press me for more, I cut off the link and blocked

I had already wasted enough time.
I grabbed a worn–out leather jacket from the back of my chair,
pulling it over my shoulders. The cold air of the night hit me as I
stepped outside, but I barely felt it.
Matthew was already waiting at the meeting point. The tension
in the air between us was thick, but I didn’t acknowledge it.
“Are you sure about this?” I asked, studying his expression.
He clenched his jaw. “This is about my brother. I won’t back out
now. But that doesn’t mean I approve of what you’re doing.”
“I didn’t expect you to.”
He sighed, shaking his head. “Every time I think I’m done with
this mess, something pulls me right back in.”
“We’ll deal with that later,” I said, lying through my teeth. There
was no later.
“I’d like to believe that,” he muttered before shifting into his
wolf form.

I followed.
We ran through the forest, the scent of damp earth and pine
filling my lungs. The journey stretched on for hours, our paws
pounding against the ground in unison. The deeper we went,
the darker the sky became, as if even the stars didn’t want to
witness what was coming next.
Eventually, I reached the edge of a small clearing. A run–down
cabin stood in the middle, boards nailed over the windows.
This place, hidden deep in the woods, far from any pack’s
influence, was where Max had been hiding.
It was quiet–too quiet. My nerves prickled, and I slowed my
breathing to stay focused.
I crept around to the side of the cabin, peeking through a gap in
the wall.
I could see someone pacing inside, ranting under his breath.
Michael.
No sign of Asher though. But I could feel him inside. Weak.
Hurting.
My wolf bristled with anger.

“Are you ready?” I asked Matthew through the link.
He nodded.
“Stay back. I’ll handle this.”
I approached the door, my heart pounding.
Then I knocked.
The door swung open with a slow creak.
Michael stood there, confusion flickering across his face before
settling into something darker.
“Good to see you, brother!” I gave him a cold smile.
“Violet,” he said, voice low and brimming with shock. “I’m
surprised you found this place.”
“You should have known that this is coming.”
His smirk widened. “And here I thought you were smarter than
this, Violet. You walked right into the lion’s den.”
“I’m not the one trapped here, Michael.”
His eyes narrowed slightly, and then looked frustrated.

“Move aside.” I hissed at him and stepped forward.
The cabin was even worse than I expected–dusty, rotting, with
broken furniture and the stench of old blood clinging to the air.
But none of that mattered.
My gaze locked onto the dark corner of the room.
There.
Asher.
Bound to a chair, his wrists raw from silver restraints. His head
hung low, his breathing uneven.
Something inside me cracked.
“What the hell did you do to him?”
“Relax,” my brother said, shutting the door behind us. “He’s
alive, isn’t he?”
