I went looking for Asher. I wanted to know what he was
planning–what he was handling on his own, away from me.
But just as I reached the corridor near Jason’s quarters, he
stepped out, blocking my way. He looked almost amused.
“You might want to give them some time,” Jason said, arms
crossed. “Asher and Ava. They’re getting along quite well these
days.”
“Stop bluffing, Jason.” I narrowed my eyes. “This won’t work on
me.”
“Bluffing?” He chuckled. “I’m just saying what I saw. Asher and
Ava, embracing each other. Alone. Why do you think I’m
standing outside?”
I didn’t respond.
“Don’t believe me, right?” Jason tilted his head. “Come, see for
yourself.”

Philip had already told me that Asher went to meet Ava. I didn’t
believe anything Jason said–I just followed him because he
knew where Asher was.
Jason led me past the side hall toward one of the private
courtyards.
And then I saw them.
Ava was standing close to Asher, her hand resting on his arm.
She leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.
Asher let her kiss him? Had he already decided to marry Ava?
I didn’t mind if that was the only way to save the child, but why
didn’t he tell me?
Jason’s voice came again. “I think you’re seeing exactly what I’m
seeing. Ava kissing Asher.”

wasn’t wrong. I did see what was happening.
