Chapter 7
The door rattled under her angry pounding, as if it might crack open at any moment, 1 steadied myself, supporting my belly with my hand, and slowly walked to the peephole.
Sure enough, it was her-disheveled hair, wearing an old coat, her face twisted with rage, screaming and jumping up and down. Neighbors in the hallway had already started peeking out from their doors.
“Mom?” I called from inside the door, deliberately raising my voice so both she and the neighbors could hear. “The problems between Aiden and me are for us to handle. What are you doing here making noise so early in the morning? By the way, this is our home, and my name is on the property deed.”
“Nonsense!” she shrieked. “My son bought this house with his money! You are nothing! Now open the door, or I’ll sue you for hiding my son’s assets!”
“And that bastard in your belly, who knows if it’s even Aiden’s…”
“What did you just say?!” My voice suddenly turned ice-cold.
“What did I say?! What kind of decent woman demands divorce while pregnant? I bet the child in your belly isn’t even his! You just want to hide from us, afraid of being exposed, that’s why you want to divorce him!”
“Open the door! Let me in! I swear I’ll break your dirty bones today!”
Her insults became more vicious, and she even started ramming the door with force.
“Shut up!” I said sternly. “Watch your mouth! If you keep talking like that, I’ll call the police!”
“Call the police? Go ahead! Let them arrest a poor old woman! Let’s see who they’ll help when they get here!”
She was fearless, screaming even louder while pounding on the door. The lock made sounds, and I instinctively stepped back, protecting my belly.
Just then, an elderly but strong voice rang out in the hallway: “Hey! What are you doing?! So early in the morning, banging and shouting, harassing a pregnant woman! Have you no shame?!”
It was the elderly lady neighbor from across the hall.
‘Mind your own business, you old witch!” Grace shoved away the old lady’s outstretched arm trying to intervene. Caught off guard, the old lady stumbled and
Fell to the side!
seeing this through the peephole, I gasped in horror and hurriedly opened the door, desperate to help her up.
The moment the door opened, Grace lunged at me! “You little bitch, finally decided to show yourself!”
Grace shoved me, aiming for my pregnant belly, screaming with vicious intent: “I’ll kill you! I’ll kill that bastard in your belly! How dare you ruin my son’s life!”
covered my belly and desperately tried to dodge backward, but in my panic, I stepped on the small rabbit figurine placed by the door. My foot slipped, I ompletely lost my balance, and with a terrified scream, I fell onto the cold, hard marble floor tiles!
ntense pain instantly spread from my back to my abdomen.
Ah…!” I screamed in agony. “God, no!”
Call 911! Now!” Neighbors panicked, shouting in chaos.
Blood! She’s bleeding!” someone screamed in terror.
Grace seemed shocked by the blood on the floor too. For a moment, she froze, but then resumed her cursing.
Serves you right! This is karma! Bastards never survive!”
Before she could finish, piercing sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder. The excruciating pain and spreading blood plunged me into ultimate fear and despair.
The child… my baby…
in my last conscious seconds, I saw police rushing in. I saw the elderly neighbor being helped up, gasping heavily, while Aiden’s mother stood there, panic stricken but her expression still full of malice.
